A few years ago at a rodeo in Oklahoma, I came face to face with this longhorn. He and his herd had been driven into the arena in a recreation of the 19th century cattle drives that brought Texas cattle to the railhead in Kansas. I was sitting on the ground at the fence, camera in hand, and he wandered over to lower his head and look at me. The sweep of those fearsomely huge horns inspired the curving lines in the abstract background. Red felt like the right color for this seemingly menacing beast, but his gentle eyes hinted at a heart of gold.
