Great Blue Herons are the largest herons native to the USA, up to four feet tall with an "S" shaped neck. I would often see them hunting quietly along our river in the muddy shallows. When they flew past with their very slow wingbeats, calling in their loud, croaking voice, we would refer to them laughingly as pterodactyls.
This double portrait continues my fascination with long necked water birds. I like to arrange them so their curving necks create a sinuous design. Their sharp beaks pointing in different directions are a counterpoint to the organic curves. The abstract background makes this painting an elegant, modern interpretation of our natural world.
Painted in oils on Belgian linen mounted on panel.
