One of my favorite books as a child was The Secret Garden. I loved the idea of a beautiful walled garden, hidden and abandoned but growing wilder with each passing season. In this painting, an explosion of flowers drifts across the landscape, partly hidden by creeping vines and untrimmed branches. Beauty and disarray can coexist, creating something more intriguing and original than any human gardener would allow. I love to create landscapes in my own garden this way, applying some design but allowing the flourishing plants to spill over and fill in as they choose. This is the English cottage garden style, where nature is allowed to be abundant, creating a wildly beautiful natural ebullience.
