In my first ever moose encounter, a large bull suddenly crossed the trail just ahead of us. He emerged almost silently and disappeared into the forest on the other side, tilting his huge antlers to fit between the dense trees. Many other moose have crossed my path since that day, including this one near Jackson and the moose who often visit my own back yard.
Recent explorations of abstract art have now begun to merge with my realism, producing the background patterns in this painting. The lines and shapes represent the mental maps that moose have of their home territory, and the trails created as they seek food, water, shelter and other moose. These natural routes rarely align with our concept and use of the same areas, so that moose and humans are constantly crossing paths.
