SOLDIlluminated by the setting sun and carrying her cottonwood saddle, this Cheyenne woman contemplates the path of her life. It is a story of many roads traveled, most not by choice. The elk teeth adorning her dress signify the wealth and status of her family. Trade with white settlers brings the luxuries of English wool cloth, German silver conchos, brass beads and shells. But those same outsiders also bring loss and sorrow to her once-prosperous people. In the face of adversity, she seeks sacred meaning and a strength of purpose, holding fast to her culture and beliefs. She represents the power of all women who stand firm to protect their family, defying those who would take away her freedom.
