Blue Skies ~ Night of Artists

I watched this beautiful white horse for a long time as he grazed quietly in a field of late summer grass. Warm morning sunlight cast cool shadows where the blue sky reflected onto the white coat. As he moved, the shadows on his muscular body shifted and changed. At this exact moment, the shadow of his head and ear were cast back onto his neck in a perfect reflection. That subtle detail inspired this painting, but most of all I enjoyed exploring all of the colors that sunlight and shadow create on a white form.

The swirl of violet and sage in the background expresses the feeling of life flowing on that slow morning, just me, a horse, the sound of the nearby river flowing over rounded rocks, and the distant mountains keeping watch over it all.
