SOLD In seldom-visited places on remote tropical islands can be found the most beautiful creatures. Most of us will never have the opportunity to see them in their natural habitat. If we are lucky, we might see one in a zoo, although we often don't appreciate these captives as much as we should. The Victoria Crowned Pigeon is one of these beautiful but overlooked birds. They are enormous for a pigeon at 30" long, are an unusual blue-grey color with fiery red eyes set in a sharp black mask. Their crowning glory is the spectacular fan of very fine, lacy feathers. Quietly wandering around on the ground in a walk-through aviary, they often to go unnoticed by children dragging their parents on to the more exciting animals or the food stall.

These gorgeous pigeons come from the island of New Guinea, not far from my Australian homeland. In this painting, I wanted to give this single bird the stage, presented at a huge scale so you can appreciate him in all his splendor. This painting is part of my new mission to bring the wonders of our natural world home to us while we can't travel so easily to see them.
