The life and strength of a warrior is enhanced by the animals and birds who give of themselves for his material possessions. Buffalo robe and horns, mountain lion bow-case, deer hide clothing, porcupine quills, horse hair, and the feathers of eagles and owls - all are nature's gifts that carry with them the essence of the living creature from which they came.
In this double portrait, the individuality of each Blackfoot warrior is reflected in his choices of clothing and equipment. Each man displays the symbols of his personal medicine, his beliefs and his achievements.
Exploring the textures and contrasts, and saying everything I wanted to say with simple, beautiful brushstrokes was my artistic challenge in this painting.
