The great Thunderbird is known to many Native American cultures and is believed to have the power to cast thunder bolts from the sky. The name in the Blackfoot language means "day bird." The legends may have been based on real birds, perhaps large condors or eagles, observed carrying off animals and occasionally, small children. Invoking the protection and strength of the Thunderbird by painting it on his shield adds to this warrior's ability to face whatever challenges may come to his people. Faith in the unseen powers of painted symbols, buffalo horns and eagle feathers supplement his physical defenses. Mounted on a magnificent Appaloosa stallion, he represents the enduring strength of the human spirit throughout history.
