Standing on a west coast clifftop, I looked below and discovered a pair of preening white pelicans. Different to the black and white pelicans of Australia, they were an unexpected treat on my first visit to America. Their bright orange bills grow strange knobs in the breeding season. As they twisted and turned to attend to their feathers, the combination of pelicans and contortions stayed in my mind and became the title of this painting. This is another of my paintings to be exhibited in Birds In Art, the prestigious international bird art competition, and it also toured several museums around the United States for a year.
